UCSD Women Win, Reach Region Final

USDHS graduate Felicia Faro, on an assist by Heather Mauro, scored the winning goal Saturday in a 1-0 victory over Macalester College that advanced the UC San Diego women’s soccer team to today’s final of the Western Regional Division III championship in St. Paul, Minn.

Against former Triton Coach John Leavey, UCSD played Macalester (11-3-2) to a 0-0 tie before Faro scored 12 minutes into overtime. UCSD (16-1-1 with 17 shutouts) had 20 shots on goal to Macalester’s one.

“Tomorrow’s game will be much more physical and much more difficult,” said Triton Coach Brian McManus. UCSD meets St. Thomas (9-3-2), a winner over St. Mary’s (12-4) on penalty kicks, today at 11 a.m. PST.

It will be the third consecutive year UCSD has played St. Thomas for the regional title. The teams split the first two.

MEN’S SOCCER

Leo Ronces had two goals to lead the the University of San Diego to a 4-1 West Coast Conference victory over Loyola Marymount at USD. The Toreros are 14-6-1 and 2-3-0, Loyola Marymount 3-13-0, 0-5-0.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

San Diego State dropped its second consecutive Big West Conference match, losing to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 15-8, 15-5, 14-16, 13-15, 15-7, at San Luis Obispo. For the Aztecs (15-14, 5-8), Amy Erben had 20 kills, and Jennifer Miller had eight blocking points. Michelle Hansen had 26 kills for Cal Poly (14-11, 7-8).

The University of San Diego dropped a West Coast Conference match to Gonzaga, 15-8, 15-9, 15-9, at the USD Sports Center. The Toreras were led by Heather Dalley’s six kills.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

U.S. International’s Kevin Bradshaw had a game-high 34 points, but the Gulls lost an exhibition game to visiting Melbourne Eastside Specters, 93-88, at Serra High School. Demetrius Laffitte had 15 points and six rebounds for USIU.

CROSS COUNTRY

Former San Diego State runner Matt Clayton outran Coronado’s Thom Hunt by just under a minute in the San Diego/Imperial Athletic Congress championships at UCSD. Clayton ran the eight kilometers in 24 minutes 34 seconds to Hunt’s 25:33. Leslie Howland’s 34:04 overwhelmed the women’s field. She defeated second-place Terri Lafferty (37:59).
