Someone stole the five-pound bronze wire-framed glasses from a statue of the late Rep. Claude Pepper.

The frames were soldered to the 9-foot statue’s nose and ears.

Sculptor Tony Lopez said he plans to attach the next pair of glasses--which could cost up to $300--with screws embedded in the figure.

The theft from the statue in Jose Marti Park was discovered this week by Lazaro Albo, who headed the drive that raised $60,000 to pay for the monument. It honors the venerable Miami Democrat, who died in May.
