Edison Ties Two Others for Sunset Title

Edison High School Coach Dave White thought his football team needed to begin the game with a strong offense against Westminster.

He overestimated. Edison (6-3 overall, 4-1 in the Sunset League) defeated Westminster, 37-0, Thursday in front of 3,500 spectators to earn a share of the title with Ocean View and Huntington Beach.

In a coin flip after the games, Huntington Beach was chosen as the league’s No. 1 playoff entry. Ocean View No. 2 and Edison No. 3.

“We knew that we had to come out right away,” White said. “We knew (Westminster) was playing for pride, and our kids did a great job.”

Edison’s Shane Sherman ran 47 yards for a touchdown seven minutes into the game and, a minute later, ran for an 11-yard touchdown after a 59-yard punt return by Mike Cunningham. Sherman followed up in the second quarter with a 2-yard touchdown run. Doug Merlino added the conversions after five of Edison’s TDs.

“Edison has a great offense line,” Westminster Coach Dan Clark said. “We stopped Sherman, at times, (but) you just can’t stop him all the time.” Westminster is 1-8, 1-4).
