COLLEGE ROUNDUP : CSUN Hurries Past Chapman to CCAA Win in Volleyball

The Cal State Northridge women’s volleyball team avenged one of its toughest losses of the season, and the Lady Matadors did it quickly Friday night.

CSUN swept seventh-ranked Chapman College, 15-10, 16-14, 17-15, in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. match that lasted just 75 minutes.

The win extended CSUN’s home conference winning streak to 54 matches.

Keira Middleton recorded 17 kills for Northridge, the No. 4-ranked team in the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. Division II.

Alissa Evans had 12 kills and the Dixon twins, Marianne and Kathleen, each added 10 for Cal State Northridge (25-10, 8-3 in conference play).

Chapman, which beat the Lady Matadors in the first round of conference play, fell to 25-4, 8-2.

In another women’s volleyball match:

Pierce d. Glendale, 15-7, 15-7, 16-4--Shawn Davidson had eight kills in the Western State Conference match at Pierce as the Brahmas (16-2, 15-2) clinched second place in conference behind champion Cuesta.

Men’s Basketball

Moorpark 87, Chaffey 61--Freshman point guard Sam Crawford, an All-City Section 4-A Division selection last season at Westchester High, scored a game-high 24 points and added 11 assists to lead Moorpark to a first-round win in the Mt. San Antonio College tournament.

Jerry Markray scored 19 points and had 12 rebounds for Moorpark in its opener.

Moorpark will play Fullerton in a second-round game tonight at 8.

Greg Taylor had 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Charlie Cangelosi had 12 points for Moorpark.

Women’s Basketball

Moorpark 78, Chaffey 35--Host Chaffey scored the first five points of the game, but Moorpark outscored Chaffey, 37-8, in the remainder of the first half in the opener for both teams.

Moorpark, which made 34 of 78 shots, was led by Katie Krause, who had 19 points and nine steals.

Debora Rabin scored 16 points and added seven assists.

Other players scoring in double for Moorpark included Cindy Wiley and Angie Long with 10 points apiece.

Men’s Soccer

Moorpark 4, Santa Monica 1--Behind two goals by freshman midfielder Billy Kranz, Moorpark clinched a postseason playoff berth in a Western State Conference match at Moorpark.

Goalie Dan Mansen had six saves for Moorpark (11-3-2, 7-1-1).
