SOUTHLAND ROUNDUP : UC Santa Barbara Wins, 38-14

Senior quarterback Steve Armstrong completed 26 of 38 passes for a school-record 463 yards and three touchdowns to lead UC Santa Barbara to a 38-14 nonconference victory over Azusa Pacific at Santa Barbara.

Armstrong also set a school record for yards passing in a season with 2,364. He has started only seven games for the Gauchos, who end the season at 8-2.

Sophomore wide receiver Brian Fleming also set a school record for receptions in a season with 59. Fleming caught eight passes for 141 yards and one touchdown Saturday. Santa Barbara outgained Azusa Pacific (3-5) in total offense, 589 yards to 221.

CS Northridge 41, Southern Utah 30--Tailback Albert Fann rushed for 182 yards in 35 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead the Matadors in a Western Conference game at Northridge.

Fann, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound junior, ran back a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown, scored on a six-yard run, and added a six-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Harris on a tailback option-pass play.

Northridge improved to 6-5; Southern Utah dropped to 5-5.

Occidental 7, Whittier 0--Mark Collinsworth kicked a 30-yard field goal and the Tigers’ had two safeties to beat the Poets in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Occidental.

Occidental’s Brady Dargan blocked a Whittier punt out of the back of the end zone for a safety, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the first quarter.

Collinsworth added his field goal in the second quarter and Whittier’s Stewart Lewin fumbled the ball out of the end zone in the fourth quarter for another safety.

Occidental improved to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in the conference. Whittier dropped to 2-7 and 2-4.

Cal Poly SLO 28, Santa Clara 0--Running back Joe Fragiadakis rushed for 152 yards in 21 carries and scored two touchdowns, including a 47-yard run in the third quarter, to lead the Mustangs to their first Western Conference win.

San Diego 31, Menlo 19--Halfback Todd Jackson ran for 149 yards and three touchdowns as the Toreros won at San Diego.

Jackson scored on an 11-yard run and twice from the one.

San Diego (7-2) took a 17-0 second-quarter lead on a eight-yard scoring run by Todd Whitley, a 23-yard field goal by Dave Bergmann and a one-yard plunge by Jackson.

Menlo scored with 55 seconds left in the half when Greg Clark hit Chris Lupenui with a four-yard pass.

Jackson, who carried the ball 30 times, capped a seven-play, 51-yard drive to open the third quarter with his second one-yard scoring run.

Menlo’s Dan Wahl scored from two yards out to close the gap to 24-13 in the fourth quarter.

Jackson closed out San Diego’s scoring with an 11-yard run.
