SAN DIEGO COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Coronado Defeats Vista in Water Polo

Coronado defeated Vista, 26-6, in the quarterfinals of the Water Polo Championships Tuesday. Tom Mitchell scored six goals and Mike Matherne had four for Coronado.

Coronado (24-3) will play Monte Vista, which defeated USDHS, 15-11, in the semifinals Thursday.

Valhalla defeated Mt. Miguel, 14-11, and will play Poway in the semifinals. Poway defeated Mira Mesa, 20-12. Chad Aronen scored eight goals, Chuck Snay had five and Brian Gillespie scored four goals for Poway (24-2).

Field Hockey

Two-time defending section champion Serra defeated Rancho Buena Vista, 3-2, in the first round of the Field Hockey Championships.

Barb Hanson scored for Serra to lead 1-0 at halftime. Four minutes into the second half Serra’s Alexi Siglin scored off an assist by Tina Montgomery. Ethelina Mendonza scored the final goal for Serra (16-1).

Michelle Gutierrez and Venus Moll each scored for Rancho Buena Vista (11-8).

Serra will play Torrey Pines in the semifinals Thursday.

After a scoreless first half of regulation, Ashley Hanson scored 10 minutes into the second half off an assist by Kalli Hose for Torrey Pines. With five minutes remaining Bishop’s scored tying the game, 1-1. After a scoreless overtime Torrey Pines defeated No. 4 Bishop’s, 2-1, in strokes. Hanson and Michaela Shannon scored in strokes for the Falcons (12-4).

Fallbrook’s goals came in the first half to defeat Hilltop, 2-0. Kristin Fine, assisted by Jeanie Palculich and Michelle Unruh, scored Fallbrook’s first goal three minutes into the game. Four minutes later Unruh scored off an assist by Palculich.

Fallbrook (12-5) will play Mira Mesa, which defeated San Marcos, 3-0. Sara Hallock made the first goal unassisted, then assisted Kisa West on the second goal. West then assisted Hallock to clinch the victory for Mira Mesa (16-2).

Girls’ Tennis

No. 1 Krista Kuechler and Erin Bohrnestedt of Torrey Pines defeated teammates, sisters Kelly and Kristen McCracken, 6-2, 6-2, in the third round and will advance to today’s quarterfinals of the section tennis doubles championships. Kuechler and Bohrnestedt will play Isabel Schoepflin and Kate Pyle of La Jolla Country Day.
