UNLV No. 1 in Nation, but Not in Big West
Nevada Las Vegas is the No. 1 team in the nation according to the Associated Press preseason poll, but Big West Conference coaches Wednesday voted the Rebels second in the conference, behind Cal State Long Beach.
Five coaches picked Long Beach--13-15 last season and currently unranked--first, and four picked UNLV in what one coach joked was “a conspiracy.”
“They might be No. 1 in the nation, but they’re not No. 1 in the Big West,” said Jerry Pimm, UC Santa Barbara Coach. Pimm and other coaches are sensitive to the national focus on UNLV.
Long Beach Coach Joe Harrington said he put his team behind UNLV, Cal State Fullerton and UCSB.
