SOUTHERN SECTION FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS : Division VII

Chaminade 10, Verbum Dei 6--Defensive back Dan Kelly tackled Verbum Dei running back Artis Houston at the Chaminade three-yard line as time ran out to give Chaminade the victory at home.

Verbum Dei (6-5) drove 76 yards in 10 plays from its own 18-yard line in the final minutes before Kelly made the game-saving tackle on a first-and-goal play from the six.

With Chaminade (8-2) trailing in the first quarter, 6-0, Felix Goodson returned a kickoff 88 yards. Mike Terzian added a 36-yard field goal with 8:15 to play to put Chaminade ahead, 10-6.

Chaminade’s Colin Havert rushed for 143 yards in 23 carries. Next week, the Eagles play Lompoc, a 38-23 winner over Mira Costa.
