Pascual Perez Becomes Yankee for $5.7 Million

The New York Yankees, who had the second-worst earned-run average in baseball last season, agreed Tuesday to a $5.7-million, three-year contract with free agent Pascual Perez.

Perez, 32, who started spring training in drug rehabilitation, was 9-13 with a 3.31 earned-run average in 33 games with the Montreal Expos. In 198 1/3 innings, he struck out 152 and walked 45.

Perez made $850,000 in 1989. He will receive a $600,000 signing bonus and a $100,000 relocation bonus in addition to salaries of $1.2 million in 1990 and $1.9 million in each of the 1991 and 1992 seasons. Perez, a right-hander, has a lifetime record of 64-62 with a 3.48 ERA in six-plus seasons in the major leagues.
