Top Players Win in Tournament

No. 2-seeded Tole Marinkovic of San Diego State defeated Vernon Yarnell of UC San Diego, 6-2, 6-0, Wednesday in the second round of the San Diego All-College Tennis Tournament at University of San Diego. Third-seeded Chris Toomey of USD defeated Jeff Belloli of SDSU, 6-3, 6-0.

No. 1-seeded Jose Luis Noriega advanced to today’s third round after Mauricio Cordova of Southwestern College defaulted.

No. 1-seeded Barbara Mueller of Tempe, Ariz., defeated Anne Reilly of La Jolla, 6-1, 6-0, in the second round of the women’s 40s at the National Hardcourt Championships at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.

Suella Bowden of La Jolla defeated Wende Cooper of Santa Rosa, 6-3, 6-0, and Sheila Wilson of San Diego was defeated by Charleen Hill of San Pedro, 6-1, 6-2.

In the first round of women’s 40s doubles, Bowden teamed up with Jane Willens of Los Angeles to defeat Eve Farquharson of Steam Boat Springs, Colo. and Nancy Walker of Phoenix, 6-1, 6-2.

BOXING

The second monthly boxing card at the Sports Arena will feature Ricky Romero defending his California super-flyweight title against Martin Cardenas of San Diego Tuesday night.

A bout between Cardenas (23-3) and Romero (20-1) was put off earlier this month because of a scheduling conflict.

On the undercard, heavyweight Eddie Williams will make his pro debut against the only fighter to beat him during his amateur career, Derek Riles (2-0).

Tickets range from $10-$50 and are available through Ticketmaster.

FOOTBALL

Former San Diego State star Craig Ellis, a slotback with the Edmonton Eskimos, was named to the Canadian Football League All-Star team in voting announced by the Football Reporters of Canada. Ellis was the CFL’s third-leading receiver this season with 80 catches.
