Moorpark’s Bradley Honored by WSC

Players from Moorpark and Valley colleges swept player-of-the-year awards in the Western State Conference.

Freddie Bradley, Moorpark’s freshman running back, was selected WSC Player of the Year in a vote of conference coaches. Bradley was the state’s scoring leader and the leading rusher in the WSC with 1,266 yards.

Tom Briggs of Moorpark, a sophomore linebacker who had 19 1/2 sacks, was chosen Northern Division defensive player of the year.

Valley quarterback Trendell Williams and defensive back Sam Edwards were the Southern Division offensive and defensive players of the year.

Glendale and Antelope Valley colleges will take part in the Golden West tournament that begins today at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, and Moorpark and College of the Canyons will compete in the Mid-State tournament at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo beginning Thursday.

Glendale (4-4) will play Cypress (8-0) tonight at 6, and Antelope Valley (7-2) will battle San Diego Mesa on Thursday night at 6.

Moorpark (6-3), which has won the Mid-State tournament six of the past 11 years, will face MiraCosta at 2 p.m. Thursday, followed by a game between Canyons (3-4) and Palomar at 4.

Steve Wapnick, a former Moorpark College pitcher, was the first player taken Monday in Major League Baseball’s re-entry draft.

Wapnick, who played in the Toronto Blue Jays organization last season, was selected by the Detroit Tigers.
