THE SIDELINES : Hawaiian Wins 2nd Surfing Title
Hans Hedemann of Hawaii won his second World Cup of Surfing title Wednesday, edging Australians Gary Elkerton and Michael Barry and Californian Richard Schmidt in 8- to 10-foot surf at Sunset Beach on Oahu’s North Shore.
Hedemann, 30, who in 1986 also won this first event in the Triple Crown of Surfing that ends the professional world tour, collected $8,000 and a 1990 four-wheel drive vehicle.
“In these conditions, you have to be in good shape and use good judgment and be in the right place at the right time,” Hedemann said.
Elkerton collected $4,000 for second place, Schmidt got $2,800 for third and Barry $2,650 for fourth.
