Two new faces combined to give the Moorpark College women’s basketball team a winning look in the Cypress tournament last week.

Sophomore Debra Rabin, who is back after missing two seasons with an injury, and freshman Angie Long took turns controlling the action as the Lady Raiders won their second tournament of the season.

Rabin, a point guard from Royal High, made two free throws with three seconds to play to give Moorpark a 62-60 victory over Mt. San Antonio in the semifinals. Rabin had 21 points in the game and averaged 20 in the tournament.

“She is as strong as ever,” Coach Gary Abraham said of Rabin, who leads the team in scoring and assists. “So far, her leadership has been outstanding.”

Rabin started at off-guard for Moorpark in 1986-87 but she injured a knee in an automobile accident and sat out the past two years. She traveled with the team and kept statistics, though, waiting for the time she could once again chalk up numbers of her own.

Long, meanwhile, was a standout at Camarillo High the past two years. She has made a rapid adjustment to the college game.

A 5-foot-10 center, Long was named most valuable player of the Cypress tournament after averaging 15 points and 12 rebounds in three games. Long, the only freshman in Moorpark’s starting lineup, leads the team in rebounds.

“Angie has asserted herself,” Abraham said. “She has really come on, especially on defense. It helps to have four sophomores on the floor with her.”

Moorpark (7-1) also won the Long Beach tournament and avenged its only loss in the final of the Cypress tournament. Orange Coast defeated the Lady Raiders last Tuesday but Moorpark dominated the rematch in the Cypress final, 68-55, behind 20 points by Rabin and 15 points and 11 rebounds from Long.

“We’ve really been strong so far,” Abraham said.
