Carpinteria Wins in Last Minute, 24-21

Carpinteria’s B.J. Shamblin caught a three-yard pass from Coley Candaele with 17 seconds remaining to give Carpinteria a 24-21 win over Tehachapi Friday night at San Marcos High in the Southern Section Division IX title game.

The victory gave Carpinteria its second title in three years.

Carpinteria, which finished the season 13-1, jumped to a 10-0 lead when Jose Hernandez scored on a 17-yard run and Robert Villa added a 25-yard field goal.

Tehachapi’s tandem of quarterback Ryan Grimes and receiver La Vail Johnson then went to work and scored on touchdowns of 65, 22 and nine yards. The third score gave Techahapi (12-2) a 21-17 fourth-quarter lead.

Candaele finished the game with 13 completions in 25 attempts for 137 yards. Izak Ondre was Carpinteria’s leading rusher with 108 yards in 15 carries.
