BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : After Fast Start, El Dorado Holds On for Victory

Jerome Facione and Mike Bradach each had 16 points in the first half to help El Dorado High School to an 11-point lead en route to an 85-80 victory over Downey Wednesday in the first round of the El Dorado High School boys’ basketball tournament.

El Dorado led, 52-41, at the half and 71-56 after three quarters. Downey outscored El Dorado, 24-14, in the fourth quarter to make it close.

Facione finished with 28 points and 11 rebounds. Bradach ended with 24 points. Matt Raya added 12 for El Dorado, which plays Saugus Canyon Friday at 7:30 in a semifinal-round game.

In another El Dorado tournament game:

Saugus Canyon 66, Sunny Hills 65--Dominic Carnesi had 28 points and David Ragsdale 14 for Sunny Hills. Jon Civita scored 21 and Jermaine Nixon 15 for Canyon.

In the Glendora tournament:

Tustin 85, Ontario 53--David Beilstein scored 21 points and Thomas Clayton had 16 to lead Tustin (6-0).

In the La Quinta tournament consolation semifinals:

Torrance 80, Katella 61--Jason Tanashiro had 22 to lead Torrance. Katella was led by Kevin Carleson, who had 24 points.

Cypress 95, La Quinta 54--Gared Rice had 27 points to lead Cypress. Walter Dawkins had 21 points for La Quinta.

In nonleague play:

Sonora 70, Magnolia 53--Greg Farlow scored 20 points to lead visiting Sonora. The Raiders led 30-28 at the half and 48-43 after three quarters. They outscored Magnolia, 22-10, in the final quarter. Wayne Thomas had 24 to lead Magnolia.

St. Margaret’s 81, Army-Navy 49--Ryan Westendorf had 28 points and 24 rebounds to lead visiting St. Margaret’s (4-4). Dann Campaigne had 24 points and Trevor Durham 12 for St. Margaret’s.

Rancho Alamitos 81, La Habra 51--Tony Cortez scored 20 points to lead visiting Rancho Alamitos. Richard Pearce had 18 points and 12 rebounds and Paul Preuss had 15 points for Rancho Alamitos.

El Toro 79, Trabuco Hills 70--Rob Johnson scored 19 points and Tim Casarez added 17 to lead El Toro (5-1) over host Trabuco Hills (3-4). Kent Riddle added 12 for El Toro. Randy Kriech had 24 points and Beau Hossler 19 for Trabuco Hills.

Loara 72, El Modena 70 (OT)--Tes Whitlock scored 30 points to lead host Loara (5-0). Kareem Collins and Joey Guadio each had 10 for Loara. Jeff Leedom had 16 points for El Modena (2-3).

Newport Harbor 59, San Clemente 52--Paig Parish scored 20 points and Craig DeBusk 13 to lead host Newport Harbor (4-1). Newport Harbor trailed, 39-38, to start the fourth quarter but took the lead for good with about three minutes left. Eddie Morgan had 20 points for San Clemente.

Orange 59, Santiago 30--Carlos Duran scored 13 points and Carl Schneebeck 11 to lead visiting Orange (3-2). Santiago is 2-3.
