BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Marina Comes Back in the Fourth Quarter to Trap Redlands Into Defeat

Marina High School used a 1-3-1 half-court trap defense and good free-throw shooting to overcome a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit and defeat Redlands, 77-73, Thursday in a third-round game of the Irvine World News basketball tournament at University High.

Thi Nguyen, who had only five points, hit two free throws to put Marina ahead, 72-71, with 1 minute 20 seconds to play. Guard Travis Boyd’s two free throws with 35 seconds left extended the lead to 74-71.

The Vikings (5-2) hit 13 of 14 free throws in the final period. Marina was 24 of 28 from the line.

Marina, down by seven at halftime, trailed, 51-40, with 5:19 remaining in the third quarter before tying the score, 55-55, at the end of the quarter.

Redlands (4-2) scored the first 10 points in the fourth period, forcing Marina to rally.

Marina center Cherokee Parks finished with 20 points. Forward Sean Haselrig and Boyd had 16 each. Guard Marcus Rogers led Redlands with 22.

In other Irvine World News games:

Santa Ana 84, Woodbridge 58--Chauncey Woolridge had 29 points and Oscar Wilson had 15 to lead Santa Ana at Woodbridge. Octavia Medina added 12 points for Santa Ana. Ryan Rauch had 11 points for Woodbridge.

Esperanza 83, Kennedy 63--Seth Romans had 22 points and Joe Foss had 20 to lead Esperanza (3-5). Kennedy (1-4) was led by Jim Barker with 19 points.

Millikan 82, Corona del Mar 69--Corona del Mar (3-4) had 17 points from Jeff Jackson and 16 from Mark Flint.

Compton 56, Saddleback 55--Calvin Curry’s basket with one minute left to play put Compton (7-1) ahead to stay, 56-55. Saddleback held a 44-36 lead with six minutes remaining in the third period, but Compton tied the score, 50-50, at the end of the quarter.

Edison 80, Eisenhower 72--Branden Jessie had 19 points and Bill Martineau 18 to pace Edison (5-1). Dan Lovelady and Steve Thobe also had 14 each for Edison. Guards Josh Sipe and Dana Jimmeyxon each scored 24 for Edison (5-2).

In the Santa Barbara tournament:

Santa Barbara 77, Westminster 74--Guard Eden Yawata scored 27 points for Westminster (2-4) in a championship quarterfinal game. Mark Murphy had 18 for Westminster.

In the Arroyo Grande tournament:

Fountain Valley 66, St. Joseph’s 50--Derrick Corcoran scored 24 points to lead Fountain Valley in the opening round.

Anaheim 69, Righetti 51--Guard Danny Castro scored 27 points and forward Victor Zambrano had 25 for Anaheim (4-1) in the opening round. Castro had three three-pointers and was 12 for 15 at the free-throw line. Zambrano hit six three-pointers.

In the La Quinta tournament:

Estancia 79, Huntington Beach 62--Guard Agustin Heredia scored 24 points and forward Mike Haas had 20 for Estancia (4-2) in a semifinal-round game. In the El Dorado tournament:

Whittier Christian 48, Canyon 46 (OT)--Kevin Wilch, a 5-foot-7 guard, hit a 10-foot jumper with 17 seconds to go in overtime to lead Whittier Christian in the semifinal game. They were the only points scored in the extra period. Canyon guard Abdi Barkhordar missed a three-pointer from the top of the key at the final buzzer.
