COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Canyons Beats Mt. San Jacinto; Streak Hits 10

College of the Canyons’ women’s basketball team extended its school-record winning streak to 10 games with a 103-46 nonconference victory over Mt. San Jacinto on Saturday at Canyons. Canyons (10-1) forced Mt. San Jacinto (1-8) into 38 turnovers.

Canyons’ Tressie Millender led all scorers with 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Dawn Coleman scored 16 points, and Michelle Cabaldon tallied 13. Dominique Ice and Debbie Barnard came off the bench to score 14 and 12 points, respectively.

In other women’s games:

Boise State 77, Cal State Northridge 38--Host Boise State, a National Collegiate Athletic Assn. Division I school, forced Cal State Northridge into 40 turnovers with a tight man-to-man defense. Boise State (4-3) had 15 steals in the nonconference game.

No Northridge player reached double figures in scoring. Guard Joan Weinerth scored a team-high nine points and added five steals. Jody Bittner, Denna Mulverhill and Julie Arlotto each scored eight points for Northridge (2-9).

Pierce 84, San Diego City College 43--Pierce scored 20 unanswered points early in the game to run away with the consolation title of the Trade Tech tournament.

Pierce (6-8) outrebounded San Diego, 54-30. Forward Carol Schoenmann pulled down 24 rebounds, and center Michelle Ahnstadt (14) and guard Sarah Dancs (15) each also had double figures in rebounds.

Southern California College 72, Occidental 71--Occidental trailed, 72-71, with 16 seconds to play and missed two potential game-winning shots in the closing moments of a nonconference game at Southern California College.

Sharon Bruner scored a game-high 23 points for Occidental.

Valley 70, Grossmont 55--Sandrine Rocher had 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists to lead Valley (8-2) to a nonconference win at Grossmont.

UC San Diego 71, The Master’s 52--UC San Diego’s Cari Young scored a game-high 21 points and had nine rebounds at The Master’s.

Susie Sparks scored a team-high 16 points for The Master’s (2-11).

MEN’S

UC San Diego 74, The Master’s 69--UC San Diego’s Tim Rapp scored a game-high 18 points to lead his team to a nonconference win at San Diego.

The Master’s (7-6) received a team-high 15 points and 11 rebounds from Jason Webster and 12 points from Jeff Newton.
