SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A 10-0 run midway through the second half and inspired play from freshman Raymond Bennett proved the difference as the Cal State Dominguez Hills basketball team defeated visiting California Lutheran on Saturday, 72-57.

Bennett connected on eight of 12 field goals for 19 points, including 14 in the first half.

“He’s been coming along nicely for us all year,” Coach Dave Yanai said. “We practiced with Robert (Barksdale) on the second unit, so he knew we were going to need a big game out of him.”

Barksdale, the Toros’ leading scorer this season, didn’t start Saturday’s game. “I felt that he would learn some things by sitting out for a while,” Yanai said. When Barksdale finally got to play, he scored 16 points.

Hot shooting by California Lutheran’s Jeff deLaveaga kept the Kingsmen close in the first half. The 6-3 sophomore guard finished with 31 points to lead all scorers.

The Toros improved their record to 3-6. The Kingsmen fell to 0-9.
