BEVERLY HILLS TOURNAMENT : Glendale Beats Buena in Battle for 3rd, 81-79

Glendale High’s Dex Puno scored a season-high 25 points Saturday, including two on a 12-foot jump shot with six seconds remaining that gave the Dynamiters an 81-79 win over Buena in the third-place game of the Beverly Hills tournament.

Buena guard Jeff Oliver, who scored a game-high 26 points, capped a furious Bulldog comeback from an eight-point deficit when he hit a three-point shot that tied the score, 77-77, with 1:57 left. Glendale’s Brent Overfelt, who was seven of eight from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter, hit both ends of a one-and-one with 1:50 left to give Glendale (6-4) a 79-77 lead.

Oliver, who scored 19 second-half points, hit two free throws to tie the score, 79-79, with 1:39 remaining. Glendale then held the ball for one minute, 33 seconds before Puno drove between two Buena defenders and pulled up near the free-throw line for his game-winner.

After a Buena timeout with four seconds left, Oliver missed a half-court shot as time expired.

Overfelt finished with 17 points, Jason Harper scored 17 and Brian Porter added 13 for Glendale. Darren Shearer scored 20 points for Buena (4-3).

In other tournament games:

Royal 65, Notre Dame 46--Chris Moriarity scored 16 of his game-high 24 points in the first half as the Highlanders (6-2) grabbed a 14-point halftime lead and cruised to a fifth-place finish.

Royal’s Russell Myers, who had missed the past four games because of mononucleosis, added 14 points--all in the second half.

Paul Hewitt scored seven of his team-high nine points in the fourth-quarter to lead Notre Dame (4-5). G.C. Marcachini, who scored 31 points Thursday in a win over Westlake, was held to six points.

Crespi 68, Ventura 50--Crespi’s Scott Barton scored 13 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter as the Celts outscored Ventura, 25-14, in the fourth quarter of the ninth-place game.
