Share

Sensational rookie David Robinson has had most of the publicity, but Terry Cummings has also been a big factor in the amazing turnaround of the San Antonio Spurs.

Cummings, obtained in an offseason trade with Milwaukee, scored a season-high 32 points and had seven rebounds Tuesday night at Charlotte to lead a 107-82 rout of the Hornets.

The easy victory gave the Spurs, the worst team in the NBA a year ago, an 18-6 record, and they retained first place in the tough Midwest Division.

Larry Brown, who suffered through 61 defeats in his first season as coach of the Spurs, is all smiles.

“When you only win 21 games in a season, you better enjoy this,” Brown told the Associated Press. “I want to see us get better in all areas, but this feels like I’ve died and gone to heaven.”

The Spurs, who were 7-17 in their first 24 games and did not win their 18th last season until after they lost 46, have won 12 of their last 13.

“I was worried even though the Hornets have won only four games,” Brown said. “They beat us both times they played us. Of course, I should have remembered that most of these guys weren’t with us last season.”

Cummings, at 33 an eight-year veteran, and the 7-1 rookie Robinson have given the Spurs a powerful one-two punch.

Robinson, the No. 2 rebounder in the league, is averaging 22.7 points, Cummings 22 points. Against Charlotte, Robinson had 14 points and 14 rebounds.
