Agoura’s Streak in Soccer Ends With Loss

El Toro High handed the Agoura girls’ soccer team its first loss in 92 matches, recording a 2-1 victory in a nonleague match Tuesday at Agoura.
Agoura (12-1-2) had played a Southern Section record 91 consecutive matches without a loss since 1986, amassing a record of 83-0-8.
Agoura’s 45-match winning streak was snapped three weeks ago in a 1-1 tie with Simi Valley.
El Toro (11-2) used goals by Shawn and Paige Viloria to take a 2-0 lead before Noelle Hagenburger scored with 10 minutes left.
Agoura Coach Dave Godwin said that the match could have been a blowout.
“It was a lot more one-sided than the 2-1 score would indicate,” Godwin said. “We were thoroughly outplayed by a very well-disciplined team.”
Godwin, who has a 112-8-11 record in six years as Agoura coach, said he is somewhat relieved that Agoura’s streak has ended.
“I’m glad it’s not a topic of concern anymore,” he said. “The ongoing theme has been that, sooner or later, they are going to lose.
“You can’t measure success only in terms of wins or losses but that they improve upon each performance.”
Although his team’s quickness was nullified by muddy playing conditions, Godwin was pleased with the performance of the defense. “They did a great job just to prevent the match from getting out of hand,” he said.
