GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Tustin Rallies to Trip Trabuco Hills, 57-56

Heather Schaer scored a layup with 17 seconds left and Tustin High School held on for a 57-56 victory over host Trabuco Hills in a nonleague girls’ basketball game Thursday.

Tustin (10-5) trailed by 12 points with two minutes left in the third quarter and cut the deficit to three with less than a minute left in the game.

Jennifer Coombs scored on a short drive with 45 seconds left and rebounded a Trabuco Hills shot after that to set up Schaer’s basket.

Trabuco Hills a shot with five seconds left and Tustin rebounded without being fouled. Trabuco Hills also missed the front end of six one-on-one free throw situations in the fourth quarter.

Tustin’s Wanda Sequeira had 22 points to lead all scorers, Coombs had nine points and Schaer added eight points and 16 rebounds. Dede Sampson had 18 points for Trabuco Hills.

Christine Garner, Tustin’s 6-foot sophomore center, missed the game because of illness .

In other nonleague girls’ basketball:

Savanna 79, Buena Park 38--Carrie Frederick scored 22 points, Stacey Aliff added 22, Jackie Boxley 14 and Hiedy Ress 13 for Savanna (9-5).

Orange 61, Sonora 35--Nicole Champion scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for visiting Orange (8-4). Alin Perez added 15 points and seven assists for Orange.

Newport Harbor 64, Laguna Hills 49--Stacey Giem had 24 points and seven assists and Jenni Hall had 11 points and nine rebounds and Kala Ross had 10 to lead Newport Harbor (4-7). Dionne Martin had 15 points and Andrea Nelson had 14 points for Laguna Hills.

In Century League girls’ basketball:

Santa Ana Valley 46, Canyon 41--Milda Valdez had 22 points and Brenda Robinson had 14 points for host Santa Ana Valley (6-6, 1-0).

Foothill 53, Villa Park 33-- Nancy Russell scored 14 points and teammate Sandi Rasmussen added 11 for host Foothill (6-7, 1-0) in the league opener for both teams. Villa Park (1-7, 0-1) was led by Evonne Caouette’s 11 points.

El Modena 68, Santa Ana 52-- Point guard Myhanh Nguyen scored 17 points and Melizza Benitez added 16 for visiting El Modena (5-6, 1-0). Gracie Lopez scored 23 for Santa Ana.

In Empire League girls’ basketball:

Esperanza 48, Loara 39--Andrea Warmus had 12 points to lead host Esperanza (10-3, 1-0). Jennifer Harney had 10 points.

El Dorado 50, Los Alamitos 47--Los Alamitos outscored host El Dorado 29-17 in the second half, but could not overcome a 15-point halftime deficit.

Los Alamitos’ Allison Arredondo scored 20 of her game-high 34 points in the second half. El Dorado (6-4, 1-0) was led by guard Theresa Korte, who scored 15 points. Yoshina Briana added 12 points.

In Olympic League girls’ basketball:

Orange Lutheran 60, Brethren 26--Sophomore center Becky Pearson scored 23 points and pulled down eight rebounds for host Orange Lutheran (2-6, 1-1). Teammate Pam Marty scored 13 points and had six rebounds Erika Ebel added 10 points for Orange Lutheran. Brethren is 1-5, 0-2.

Whittier Christian 48, Capistrano Valley Christian 41--Jennifer Jackson and Sarah Moore scored 14 points each for Whittier Christian (3-7, 2-0). Capistrano Valley Christian dropped to 3-6 and 1-1.

In South Coast League girls’ basketball:

El Toro 72, Irvine 34--Guard Kari Yoshioka scored 22 points and had eight assists and eight rebounds to lead visiting El Toro win its league opener. Judy Gettys scored 17 for Irvine (0-1, 0-2).
