SAN DIEGO SPORTS ET CETERA : UCSD Men Win, Reach Final in Tournament

UC San Diego defeated Bethany Bible College, 94-73, Friday night at Triton Gym to advance to the championship game of the La Jolla men’s basketball tournament tonight at 8.

The Tritons will meet Willamette, which earlier routed Claremont College, 83-62.

The victory was UCSD’s 10th in 13 games, giving the Tritons one more than it ended with last year. UCSD scored the first 16 points and never trailed. Tim Rapp scored 32 points and had six rebounds and four assists for the Tritons (10-3). Teammate Gordon McNeill added 15 points.

Bethany Bible College will meet Claremont in the consolation game tonight at 6.

Brad Davis made the second of two free throws with just one second left to give Point Loma Nazarene College a 69-68 victory over Western Washington in the opening round of the Point Loma basketball tournament.

PLNC (4-8) will go up against George Fox in the championship game tonight at 7:45. George Fox was a 97-80 winner over Grace College Friday.

Davis finished with 17, as did teammate Ron Hubbard. Brian Thurston added 15.

Westmont routed Christian Heritage, 98-62, to capture the Tom Byron tournament in Santa Barbara and win its 11th consecutive game.

Christian Heritage saw its six-game winning streak snapped after making just two of 13 shots and getting outscored, 20-8, in the first 8:13 of the second half.

Forward Peter Partain scored 18 of his game-high 25 points in the second half for Westmont, which had 33 assists on its 38 baskets.

Brad Soucie scored 21 points to lead the Hawks.
