BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Free Throws Are the Key as Valencia Beats Buena Park

Richard Tibbie had 17 points to spark Valencia to a 55-53 victory over Buena Park in a nonleague boys’ basketball game Saturday at Buena Park.

Valencia, which improved to 6-8, converted eight free throws in the fourth quarter . Buena Park had only one in the entire game.

Ray Lanier had 32 points for Buena Park (6-8).

Cajon 83, Loara 71--After trailing, 15-3, early, Loara pulled to 75-73 with about a minute remaining. But Loara (11-2) didn’t make any more of its shots, and Cajon (13-1) made eight consecutive free throws to close out the game.

Loara guard Tes Whitlock scored 36 points, including six three-pointers, but he fouled out in the final minute. Five Loara players fouled out.

Cajon was led by center Manjue Sampson, who had 20 points, and point guard Amar Washington, who had 18.

Magnolia 68, Santa Ana Valley 56--Phouphet Singbadith , Matt Knudtson and Josh Acosta each had 13 points to lead Magnolia (5-7). Santa Ana Valley’s George Alvarado had 21.

Mission Viejo 80, Trabuco Hills 75--After leading all the way, host Mission Viejo saw its 10-point halftime lead dwindle to one with about two minutes left, as Tim Manning and Bo Hossler led the Trabuco Hills rally. But junior forward Mike Boucher broke away for a dunk to build the lead back to three points, and Mission Viejo (11-4) hung on.
