Bishop Montgomery High’s basketball team snapped a 38-game Angelus League losing streak Friday night by beating highly ranked Bishop Amat, 69-53, in a league opener at Bishop Amat.

“I wasn’t aware we had lost that many in a row until somebody told me,” said first-year Coach Doug Mitchell, whose team improved to 10-3 overall with its fourth straight win. “This gets the monkey off our back.”

Senior point guard Darrell Daniel paced Bishop Montgomery with a game-high 26 points, and forwards Pete Tolliver and Joe Magyar did a good job on the boards. Sophomore swingman Joe Hadnot, averaging 17 points a game since the Knights lost to Torrance last week, scored 13.

“I was worried about (Bishop Amat’s) inside people, but our inside guys played great,” Mitchell said. “I’m sure we outrebounded them.”

The victory over Bishop Amat, ranked No. 3 in the Southern Section 4-AA preseason poll, strengthened Mitchell’s hopes that Bishop Montgomery can finish among the top three in the five-team Angelus League and qualify for the playoffs.

“That’s what our goal is,” he said. “The kids believe in it.”
