HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Jones Leads N. Hollywood to Win Over Sylmar, 93-73

Pepperdine-bound center Dana Jones scored 20 points and grabbed 18 rebounds Wednesday to lead North Hollywood High over Sylmar, 93-73, in a Valley Pac-8 basketball game at North Hollywood. Forwards Harry Marks and Eric Jackson combined for 37 points for the Huskies (14-1, 2-0). Robert Hill contributed eight points and 16 assists for North Hollywood.

Sylmar (8-7, 1-1), which trailed, 32-13, after the first quarter, was paced by Donovan Walker (25 points) and Jason Miles (20).

In other boys’ games:

Kennedy 66, Canoga Park 62--Kennedy held off the pesky Hunters at Canoga Park to even its Northwest Valley Conference record at 1-1.

Canoga Park (8-7, 0-2) grabbed a 55-54 lead with 4:30 to play on a layup by senior forward Bobby Hines. Kennedy (8-6) then worked the ball to center Josh Etting, who buried a short turnaround jump shot to give the Golden Cougars a permanent lead.

Grant 65, Van Nuys 46--Grant leaped to a 19-0 advantage at Van Nuys, then substituted freely in the Valley Pac-8 Conference game.

The Lancers (12-3, 2-0) were led by Rene de la Hoya (15 points), Keith Weinstein (12) and Setro Terzian (12).

Taft 58, Chatsworth 51--Taft survived a late Chancellor surge at Chatsworth to improve to 2-0 in Northwest Valley Conference play.

Reseda 74, Birmingham 52--Reseda’s front line of Mike Hawkins, Marquis Wilborn and Marquis Burns combined for 57 points and 37 rebounds in a Valley Pac-8 game at Reseda.

Monroe 67, Poly 61--Jesse Wallace scored 21 and Lodis Woodmore added 12 for the Vikings (2-9, 1-1) in a Valley Pac-8 game.

Thousand Oaks 60, Channel Islands 49--Thousand Oaks (7-7, 2-1) was six for six from the free throw line in the fourth quarter of the Marmonte League game.

Dusty Lysobey and Gal Hever each scored 13 points to pace Thousand Oaks. Kenji Kato scored 12 points to lead Channel Islands.

Westlake 61, Camarillo 54--Camarillo’s David Harbour scored a game-high 29 points, but Westlake junior center John Van Spyk countered with 17 points--including nine of nine free throws--in a Marmonte League game.

Eagle Rock 77, Sherman Oaks CES 75--Eagle Rock needed a layup in the final seven seconds of the Northern League game to outlast host Sherman Oaks CES.

GIRLS

El Camino Real 58, Canoga Park 45--Cathy Balint had team-high totals of 14 points, eight assists and nine steals for El Camino Real (6-4, 2-0) in the Northwest Valley Conference game at home.

San Fernando 51, Cleveland 50--Aquanetta Glaze finished with 13 points, but it was her layup with eight seconds to play that lifted the Tigers in a Northwest Valley game at Cleveland.

North Hollywood 50, Sylmar 29--Sylmar’s Katina Mines, who averages 32 points a game, was held to seven points in the Valley Pac-8 game at Sylmar. Suzi Shimoyama defended Mines, who had only two points until the fourth quarter.

Taft 43, Chatsworth 39--Colleen Pratt made a short jump shot with less than a minute to play to preserve Taft’s Northwest Valley win at home.

Birmingham 45, Reseda 32--Tracie Harris (19 points) and Gayle Fischer (12) led Birmingham (6-3, 1-1) in a Valley Pac-8 game at home.

Van Nuys 70, Grant 29--Tina Means led the Wolves to the Valley Pac-8 blowout with 22 points. Staci Toon had 15 rebounds.
