Frazier Leads Tide of Upsets in Australia

American Amy Frazier led a group of women’s upset winners with a 6-3, 6-4 third-round triumph over second-seeded Jana Novotna of Czechoslovakia in the $400,000 New South Wales Open tennis championships today.

Top-seeded Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia also lost, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3, to unheralded compatriot Radka Zrubakova.

Among the men, No. 1 seed Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia, Wimbledon and U.S. Open champion Boris Becker of West Germany, Yannick Noah of France and Mats Wilander of Sweden posted second-round victories.

Other seeded players losing were No. 9 Gigi Fernandez of the United States and No. 4 Hana Mandlikova of Australia.

Becker, the No. 2 men’s seed, set up a quarterfinal match against compatriot Carl-Uwe Steeb with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Australian Wally Masur.

Qualifiers David Wheaton and Pete Sampras of Rancho Palos Verdes also won second-round matches.

In Auckland, New Zealand, American Jimmy Arias recovered from a slow start today to beat compatriot Glenn Layendecker and advance to the quarterfinals of the New Zealand Open tennis championship.

In other second-round action, top-seeded Soviet Andrei Chesnokov, Canadian Grant Connell and New Zealand veteran Steven Guy advanced.

In Adelaide, Australia, Austrian Thomas Muster outlasted Australian Darren Cahill 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), 6-2 in the Rio Challenge exhibition tennis tournament at Memorial Drive.

In the second match of the night, Henri Leconte of France rebounded from an opening night loss to John McEnroe and beat American Jim Courier 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 6-4.
