DIGEST : Antelope Valley to Hold Service for Sanford

A memorial service for Antelope Valley High senior Chris Sanford, who was killed last Saturday night when he was struck by a stray bullet that police believe was fired by a gang member, is scheduled today at 11:30 a.m. at the school’s football field. The funeral is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday at Lancaster Baptist Church.

Sanford, the goalkeeper for the Antelopes’ soccer team, was shot in the right eye after a fight broke out at a party he was attending in Lancaster, police said. Authorities continue to look for a 16- to 18-year-old Latino male believed to be the member of a San Fernando Valley gang.

Rich Hill, Cal Lutheran’s baseball coach, has been selected head coach of the Chatham A’s in the Cape Cod League, one of the nation’s top summer leagues for college-level players.

The Cape Cod League season runs from June until August. Hill was an assistant coach for the Brewster Whitecaps last season.

Jeff deLaveaga of Cal Lutheran is ranked 19th in National Assn. Intercollegiate Athletics scoring, averaging 26.7 points a game. Greg Sutton of Oral Roberts ranks first with a 41.7 average.

DeLaveaga, a sophomore guard, is also the second leading scorer in District 3.

Greg Maw, a senior kicker for the Cal Lutheran football team, has been named a second-team Academic All-American. Maw, a political science major with a 3.83 grade-point average, led the Kingsmen in scoring last season. He kicked six field goals and 14 extra points.

The Cal State Northridge track and field coaching staff will hold a free learn-by-doing clinic from 9:30 to 11:30 on Saturday morning.

The clinic will be held before an all-comers meet at CSUN starting at noon. Northridge Coach Don Strametz and assistants Tony Veney, Bob Augello, Tim Werner and Dan Lange will be on hand.

Softball sign-ups for the Sylmar Independent League, for girls aged 7 to 18, will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the weekends of Jan. 13-14, 20-21 and 27-28.

A ceremony sponsored by the Mid-Valley Baseball Assn. will be held at noon Feb. 4 to dedicate a baseball field in the name of Brett Saberhagen.

Saberhagen, a Cleveland High graduate and two-time Cy Young Award winner for the Kansas City Royals, will be present.

A celebrity softball game will be held after the ceremony.

The field is located at the corner of Oxnard Street and Louise Avenue in Encino.
