Unleashed Dogs and Postmen

In response to “Family Grieves for Pet Dog Reportedly Slain by Postman,” Part B, Dec. 28:

When I read the article I thought I was watching “Inside Edition.” Quite a few important issues seemed to be lost in sensationalism.

Since the postman’s lawyer has undoubtedly told him not to talk to the press, we are hearing only the owner’s side, especially since we can expect the postman’s supervisor and agency spokesmen to try to absolve themselves of all blame. Still, it is clear that the dog was not on a leash, was not in the house, was not behind a fence, and was heading toward the postman.

If an auto is not under the control of the driver we hold him liable. If a gun is left unattended and unsecured we hold the owner liable. If the owner of a potentially dangerous animal does not have it under control that owner is creating a hazard. Many pet owners anthropomorphize their dogs, projecting friendliness and obedience in the animal which may not exist. Meanwhile, the innocent jogger, bicyclist, meter reader or postman must guess at the animal’s potential to cause injury at any particular day and time.

The only safety equipment for mail carriers is an oil of pepper spray. If this “doggie Mace” works with the probability of “people Mace” (tear gas) it can be expected to fail at least 20% of the time.
