San Diego State offensive line coach Steve Devine has resigned and has accepted a position as offensive coordinator at Ohio University, SDSU coach Al Luginbill said Monday.

Luginbill said assistant coach Ulima Afoa would take over as offensive line coach. Afoa, 30, a former Aztec guard, has been an assistant at SDSU since 1982. He had been serving as assistant line coach and recruiting coordinator.

Luginbill said he would use Devine’s vacancy to hire a full-time recruiting coordinator. He said that the appointment would not be made before Feb. 15, one day after the start of the regular 7 1/2-week period during which high school seniors are permitted to sign national letters of intent.

“I’ve always felt I needed someone who had no on-the-field coaching responsibilities whose full-time job was recruiting,” Luginbill said. “If we had any movement on the staff, that was what I wanted to do.”

Devine, 38, joined the SDSU staff two years ago after five seasons at Ohio State.
