A Santee woman was in serious condition Tuesday after she was shot by her estranged husband, who then killed himself.

Kathy Ann Price, 33, was shot once in the head by Robert Allan Price, 28, who shot himself in the head.

Kathy Ann Price was in the intensive care unit at Sharp Memorial Hospital. “She’s awake, she’s alert,” hospital spokeswoman Caty van Housen said. “She’s better.”

The incident is being treated as an attempted murder and suicide by Sheriff’s Department homicide detectives.

Sgt. Chuck Curtis said the incident began about 9 p.m. Monday when Robert Allan Price went to his estranged wife’s apartment, in the 11000 block of Woodside Avenue. The couple argued and the woman ran out of her home about 10:30 p.m.

Robert Allan Price chased her, catching up with his wife at a gate in a walkway in the apartment complex, Curtis said. He shot her once in the head, then shot himself, Curtis said.

Curtis said the woman’s 13-year-old daughter witnessed the shooting. Three of the woman’s younger children were asleep in the apartment during the argument and the shooting. All four children are now in the care of the woman’s aunt.

Deputy Coroner George Dickason said Robert Allan Price was pronounced dead at the scene. Dickason said Price lived in the 1200 block of Railroad Street in Jacumba.
