BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Los Alamitos Wins on Late Free Throw

Anthony Napolitano made the second of two free throws with three seconds left give Los Alamitos High School a 58-57 victory over El Dorado in an Empire League basketball game Wednesday at El Dorado.

The Golden Hawks (11-7 overall, 2-2 in the league) had a chance to win the game, but a shot Jerome Facione bounced off the rim at the buzzer.

Mike Wilson scored 19 points and Dan Stockwell added 11 for Los Alamitos (14-6, 4-0). Mike Bradach had 16 and Facione 14 for El Dorado.

Loara 74, Cypress 72--Tes Whitlock scored 20 points to lead Loara (13-3, 2-2) at Cypress. Jared Rice scored 31 points for Cypress (7-11, 0-4).

In the Century League:

El Modena 67, Villa Park 51--Jeff Leedom scored 26 points and Greg Gottlieb 20 to lead the Vanguards (11-7, 3-1) at El Modena. The Vanguards led, 24-12, at the end of the first quarter and were never challenged. Chris Kirby scored 20 points for Villa Park (1-13, 0-4).

Santa Ana 60, Canyon 55--Chauncy Woolridge returned after a two-game absence for personal reasons and scored 13 points to lead host Santa Ana (7-10, 2-2). Canyon (9-9, 2-2) trailed by 20 points going into the final quarter but cut the final deficit to five points with some accurate free-throw shooting and by forcing turnovers.

Foothill 68, Santa Ana Valley 36--Mark Wilkinson had 23 points, Fred Amos had 18 and Nick Konopisos had nine points and eight rebounds for host Foothill (12-6, 4-0). George Alvarado had 19 points for Santa Ana Valley (4-10, 1-3).

In the Olympic League:

Santa Margarita 75, Whitney 63--The Eagles rallied from an 18-9 first-quarter deficit at Cerritos Regional Park. Santa Margarita (6-9, 3-3) pulled to within two points, 32-30, at halftime, then outscored Whitney, 17-8, in the third quarter. Dan Bathey scored 26 points and Jeff Layne 17 for the Eagles, and each had 10 rebounds.

In the Sea View League:

Corona del Mar 48, Tustin 38--In a battle for first place, John Paulsen scored 17 points and teammate Jeff Jackson added 13 points to lead Corona del Mar (12-6, 3-0).

Corona del Mar’s man-to-man defense was responsible for Tustin’s 30% shooting. No player managed to score in double figures for Tustin (15-3, 2-1).

Newport Harbor 60, Estancia 58--Ian Long scored 26 points to lead Newport Harbor (12-6, 1-2) at Estancia. The Sailors trailed, 30-21, at halftime but outscored the Eagles, 23-4, in the third quarter to take a 44-34 lead. Estancia closed to within three points in the fourth quarter but could get no closer until the final six seconds. Agustin Heredia scored 25 points for Estancia (10-7, 1-2).

Saddleback 81, University 56--Elton Moore had 25 points and Marco Gomez had 17 to lead visiting Saddleback (13-7, 2-1). Brian Smith had 14 points for University (5-11, 0-3).

In the South Coast League:

El Toro 92, San Clemente 56--Rob Johnson had 28 points and Greg Everett had 11 points and 12 rebounds to lead the rout by El Toro (13-5, 3-1). Jason Ortega had 19 points for San Clemente (6-12, 0-4).

Capistrano Valley 74, Dana Hills 52--Scott McCorkle had 25 points and Chris Kostoff had 20 points to lead Capistrano Valley (12-7, 3-1). J.B. Taylor had 14 points for Dana Hills.

Mission Viejo 48, Irvine 43--Mark Wright had 12 points and Greg Amaya had 10 points to lead Mission Viejo (13-5, 3-1).
