Recognition Overdue for Female Athletes
I was very encouraged when the Times introduced the Valley section several years ago. However, when it became obvious that the community was still receiving second-rate coverage, my bubbling enthusiasm turned to disappointment.
While such coverage of local news and features is frustrating, it pales in comparison to the sexism displayed in your sports pages. Even once-all-male prep schools such as Chaminade, Harvard and Notre Dame recognize that many of the Valley’s females--who make up 51% of the total population--are involved in athletics.
It is time more recognition was given to female coaches, equestrians, golfers, gymnasts, skaters and skiers. In addition, there should be more stories about women in basketball, cycling, track, soccer, softball, swimming and volleyball.
