VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Basler Records 7th Shutout but Hart Settles for Tie Against Muir

Goalkeeper Jim Basler made 12 saves and recorded his seventh shutout of the season as Hart High tied Muir, 0-0, in a Foothill League boys’ soccer match Monday at Muir.

It marked the second scoreless tie of the season for the two teams; they also deadlocked in a league opener Dec. 12 at Hart.

Hart (11-1-3 overall, 5-1-3 in league play) is second in the league standings, two points behind Muir (6-0-3 in league play).

In other boys’ soccer matches:

Burroughs 1, Pasadena 0--Jeff Gierok scored halfway through the second half to lift the Indians in a Foothill League match at Pasadena.

Goalkeeper Mika Persson recorded his fourth shutout in the past five matches for Burroughs (8-5-1, 5-3-1).

Pasadena, which took just nine shots on goal, fell to 4-8-2, 1-7-1.

Reseda 1, Poly 0--Striker Juan Ortiz scored 10 minutes into the second half for the only score in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match at Reseda.

Junior goalkeeper Guillermo Castro notched his fifth shutout of the season for the Regents (2-5-3, 1-4-1).

San Fernando 4, Kennedy 2--Marco Zambrano sat on the sideline for the first half, then scored a hat trick in the second 40 minutes for the Tigers in a Northwest Valley Conference match at home.

The midfielder’s timely shots gave San Fernando a 4-0 advantage in the second half. Eric Campos scored to give the Tigers, who totaled 15 shots, a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Juan Gomez, a sophomore, recorded five saves in goal for San Fernando.

The Golden Cougars dropped to 0-7 in league play.

Grant 2, Birmingham 2--Grant forward Mike Seid scored with five minutes remaining at Birmingham to help the Lancers gain a tie in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match.

Goalkeeper Julio Castro made six saves for Grant (5-2-2, 2-2-2).

Scott Brown and Mario Martinez each scored for the Braves (6-2-3, 3-0-3).

Chatsworth 4, Canoga Park 0--Eddie Ramos scored twice and Donnie Oades and Jeremy Foster each added a goal to lead the Chancellors (5-3-3, 4-2-1) in a Northwest Valley Conference match at home.

Canoga Park fell to 0-7 in league play.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Alemany 1, Chaminade 0--Angela Forstrom scored at the 30-minute mark in the first half for the Indians, ranked No. 2 in the Southern Section 2-A Division, in a San Fernando Valley League match at Chaminade.

Goalkeeper Cami Tubbs notched her sixth shutout of the season for Alemany (10-5-2, 4-0).

Chaminade, third-ranked in the 2-A, dropped to 16-2-1, 3-1-1.

Notre Dame 3, Crossroads 0--Christine Kane, Erin Casey and Missa Sliger each scored a goal for Notre Dame in a San Fernando Valley League match at Crossroads.

Goalkeeper Simona Errico recorded her eighth shutout of the season for Notre Dame (8-9, 1-3).

Grant 8, Roosevelt 0--Amanda Walzer, the all-time leading scorer in the City Section with 83 goals in two seasons, scored five to lead the Lancers (11-3, 7-0) in a Northeastern League match at Rooseelt.

The victory was goalkeeper Elana Tuizer’s seventh consecutive shutout in league play.

Chatsworth 6, Kennedy 0--Laura Horn scored three goals and Chancellor teammates Kris Bassler and Heather Gorman each had a goal and two assists for the defending City Section champions in a Valley League match at Kennedy.

Chatsworth improved to 10-1, 7-0 in league play.

El Camino Real 2, Birmingham 0--Kari Lee, a left wing, scored twice in the second half to pace the Conquistadores in a Valley League match at home.

Goalkeeper Alex Telleson notched her sixth shutout for El Camino Real (5-1-1 in league play).

Birmingham is 3-3-0 in league play.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Maranatha 52, Montclair Prep 22--Maranatha led, 18-4, after the first quarter in the Alpha League game at Montclair Prep.

Debbie Miller scored a game-high 12 points for Maranatha. Serene Asha scored a team-high eight points for Montclair Prep (3-11, 0-7).

Notre Dame 50, Bell Jeff 45--Kim Fischer scored a game-high 25 points for Notre Dame in a San Fernando Valley League game at Bell-Jeff.

Bell-Jeff took a 17-11 lead after one quarter but scored only five points in the second quarter and trailed, 24-22, at halftime. The Guards surged again in the third quarter to take a 38-36 lead. Notre Dame, however, outscored Bell-Jeff, 14-7, in the fourth quarter to win.

Lori Leon led Bell-Jeff (11-8, 3-2) with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Guard Luisa Parra handed out 12 assists for Notre Dame (7-8, 4-1).

Alemany 67, Chaminade 20--Sarah Guziel scored 16 points and Tori McCormick scored 14 at Chaminade to keep Alemany unbeaten in San Fernando Valley League play.

Alemany (13-6, 5-0) used a 22-3 second-quarter spurt to put away the win.

Chaminade fell to 1-4 in league play.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Montclair Prep 73, Maranatha 54--Montclair Prep posted its 12th consecutive win in an Alpha League game at Maranatha.

J. T. Billingslea scored a team-high 15 points and teammates Robert Thomas and Chris Sanger each added 14 points for the Mounties.

Sanger and Jason Gerber each had 11 rebounds for Montclair Prep (14-3, 7-0).

Maranatha fell to 2-12, 0-8.

Providence 78, Southwestern 37--Senior forward Tim Edgar scored a game-high 32 points and six-foot-four junior center Chris Jones scored 19 and grabbed 15 rebounds for Providence (9-6, 4-1) in a Liberty League game at Southwestern.

Providence shot 52% (25 of 48) from the field and outshot Southwestern, 28-2, from the free-throw line. Guard Bret Ferrante added 13 points for Providence.

Highland Hall 67, Einstein Academy 34--John Klejnot scored 19 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and blocked seven shots as Highland Hall won a Westside League game at Highland Hall.

Greg Anastas scored 14 points and also grabbed 16 rebounds for Highland Hall (13-2, 7-0).

Guard Robert Ramirez shared team-high honors with Klejnot and also handed out eight assists.

Einstein Academy fell to 2-10, 2-6 in league play.
