DIGEST : Stork, Buck Named to ‘80s WIVA Team

Taft High graduates Jeff Stork and Craig Buck were named to the Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn.’s All-Decade team for the 1980s.

Stork, the starting setter on the 1988 U. S. Olympic team that won a gold medal in Seoul, was a first-team selection. He was a three-time All-American at Pepperdine, where he played from 1981-84.

Buck, who also played for the Waves (1977-80), earned honorable mention. A two-time All-American at Pepperdine, Buck was a middle blocker on the gold medal-winning 1984 U. S. Olympic squad. He also was on the ’88 team.

The West Valley Eagles track club again appears to be loaded with young sprint talent.

Competing against some of the best youth teams in Southern California in the Sunkist Invitational on Friday at the Sports Arena, the Eagles won the midget (ages 10 and 11) boys’ 4 x 160-yard relay in 1 minute 19.7 seconds. The Los Angeles Jets placed second in 1:21.1, followed by the South Bay Panthers in 1:22.1.

The West Valley team included Armone Lochard, Bryant Hayes, Jalal Milby and Steve Webber.

The United States Cycling Federation board of directors has named Maureen Manley of Thousand Oaks, Haldane Morris of Sherman Oaks and David Brinton of North Hollywood to the 1990 cycling team.

Manley and Morris are members of the “A” team; Manley will compete on the women’s road team and Morris will compete on the men’s track team. Brinton is part of the men’s “B” track team.

“A” team members are considered potential competitors in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona; “B” teams represent the United States in international competitions.

Jason Stelle, an Agoura High junior, has been chosen for the U. S. junior national swim team.

One of 37 swimmers selected, Stelle will depart for Europe today and compete in meets in Paris on Feb. 2-4, and in East Berlin, Feb. 6-7.

Stelle, a 17-year-old from Westlake Village, was chosen for the junior national tour after finishing second in the 100-meter backstroke in the junior nationals in Austin, Tex., last summer.

Dave Salzwedel, a senior goalie on the Cal Lutheran soccer team, has been selected for the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics Senior Bowl.

Salzwedel was the only NAIA District 3 player selected for the game, which will be held in Las Cruces, N. M. The Senior Bowl is being held in conjunction with the World Collegiate Soccer Championships, which will take place the week of April 18-22.

Salzwedel’s selection was announced at the National Soccer Coaches convention in Cincinnati, where he also was named the first-team Far West region goalie. Junior forward Larry Gidley also was named to the first team but as a midfielder. Senior Kenny Epperson was a second-team defender.

Tryouts for the West Valley girls’ softball team will be held at 9 a.m. on Feb. 3 and Feb. 10 at Hale Junior High in Woodland Hills.
