Accuracy at Line Keys Burroughs’ Rise to Top

Share

Depth, balanced scoring and sure-shot free-throw shooting have vaulted Burroughs (6-0) into sole possession of first place in the Foothill League.

The Indians (12-6 overall) have won seven in a row and at least four players have scored in double figures in every league game. Six players have scored in double figures once and five have scored in double figures twice.

In an 82-68 victory over Hart on Friday, Burroughs made 19 of 24 free throws. The previous week, the Indians made 25 of 28 from the line in an 80-70 victory over second-place Alhambra.

All told, Burroughs has made 92 of 131 free throws (70%) in league play.

Offense: Royal’s Russell Myers, a 6-foot-5 senior, has become the first player in school history to score 1,000 points. Myers, who holds almost every school scoring record, has 1,073 points during a four-year career. Myers is on the brink of eclipsing Andy Jercha’s single-season scoring record of 487 points set in 1983-84 . Myers has 437 points in 18 games, an average of 24.3.

Canoga Park’s Marcus Reed, a senior guard who is averaging 20.4 points a game in Northwest Valley Conference play, has scored 20 points or more in 11 of 18 games. . . . Grant’s Rene de la Hoya is shooting 65% from the field, having made 98 of 150 shots.

Agoura scored 58 second-half points during its 90-55 win over Santa Paula on Friday. The Chargers, who led at halftime, 32-31, scored 34 points in the third quarter. . . . Guard James Chen handed out 29 assists in two Reseda wins last week.

Winning ways: With its recent 65-62 victory over Arcadia in a Pacific League game, Crescenta Valley has virtually assured itself of its 27th winning record in 28 seasons. Under Coach John Goffredo, the Falcons (12-8, 4-2) have made the Southern Section playoffs 10 of 12 seasons.

Undersized: Channel Islands has no player taller than 6-foot-3, and that has hurt the Raiders more than once this season. Newbury Park’s Kevin Loveall, a 6-8 senior, was the latest Marmonte League center to benefit from the Raiders’ lack of height. Loveall made 11 of 15 field-goal attempts and had season highs of 27 points and 17 rebounds against Channel Islands last week. Westlake’s B. J. Sena and John Van Spyk, a pair of 6-6 inside players, combined to hit 22 of 29 shots and score 52 points against the Raiders on Jan. 19.
