Site of Antelope Valley Games in Doubt After Vandals Strike at Paraclete Gym

The men’s and women’s basketball teams from Antelope Valley College and College of the Desert will play Saturday. That much is certain. Where the games will be played has been, and still is, in question.

The games originally were to take place at Antelope Valley, but another event already had been scheduled at the Marauders’ gym.

Then it was announced that Thomas and Mack Arena at Nevada Las Vegas would be the site of the men’s game, to be played after the Runnin’ Rebels’ nationally televised match-up with North Carolina State.

But that plan was scrapped by UNLV administrators after the NCAA expressed concern about the possibility of recruiting violations. So the next plan called for the men’s game to follow the women’s game Saturday at Paraclete High.

However, during the weekend, Paraclete’s gym was vandalized and two glass backboards were broken. As a result, Paraclete’s games this week are being played at Antelope Valley College.

Glenn Haller, Antelope Valley’s sports information director, said new backboards arrived at Paraclete on Wednesday and that repairs should be made by Saturday. But he did not seem sure that the games actually would be played there.

“At least that’s what we’ve been told,” Haller said. “We’re going by that. Whether it will or won’t is still unknown.”

Sounds like a definite maybe.
