PREP SOCCER ROUNDUP : Villa Park Surprises Second-Ranked Santa Ana

Ronald Lou scored in the first half and Villa Park High School upset Santa Ana, 1-0, in a Century League boys’ soccer match Friday at Villa Park.

Santa Ana (13-3-6, 5-1-2 in league) was the second-ranked team in the county. Jimmy Obleda had an assist for Villa Park (7-6-4, 2-4-2). Robert Bowman had 14 saves for Villa Park.

In another Century League match:

Canyon 1, Foothill 0--Unranked Canyon (10-7-4, 3-2-2) scored with about nine minutes left in the match to upset third-ranked Foothill (16-3-5, 3-1-4). Greg Lawrence threw the ball across the field and toward the goal’s opposite post where Aaron Bernat headed the ball under the crossbar from about 20 feet out. Canyon’s Chris Snitko had 10 saves and Foothill’s Lance Anderson had nine saves.

In the Empire League:

Cypress 1, Esperanza 0--Cory Senko scored in the second half on a penalty kick with 12 minutes left as host Cypress moved into first. Ray Arvizu had five saves for Cypress (14-2-5, 5-1-2). Esperanza is 5-2-1 in league play.

El Dorado 1, Katella 0--Derek Dean scored early in the second half for host El Dorado (11-6-6, 3-3-1).

In the Garden Grove League:

Santiago 0, La Quinta 0--Tony Diaz had five saves for visiting Santiago (15-3-4, 9-0-2), which already has clinched the league title, its first in the school’s 27-year history. Praseuth Sotakoun had five saves for La Quinta (11-6-5, 6-1-4).

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 3, Whittier Christian 0--Lee Beack had two goals and Paul Cunningham added one to lead host Orange Lutheran (11-2-2, 9-2-0). Dave Hopper had seven saves for his 10th shutout. Whittier Christian is 7-4-0 in league.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Orange 4, Costa Mesa 1--Ricky Heimer had two goals and Tim Huen and Kevin Esparza each had one to lead visiting top-ranked Orange (15-0-3, 12-0-1).

Laguna Hills 2, Trabuco Hills 0--Juan Strutton scored twice for visiting Laguna Hills (18-4, 11-2). Strutton has 16 goals this season.

In the Sea View League:

Corona del Mar 2, Tustin 1--Chris Smith had both goals and Chris Connelly had five saves to lead Corona del Mar (10-11-1, 3-4-1) at Tustin. Tim Wilson scored for Tustin and Andy Bermudez had seven saves.

Newport Harbor 2, Estancia 2--Tristan Leyva scored two goals for first-place Newport Harbor (16-3-4, 4-0-4), but host Estancia tied the score after each of his goals. Sergio Suarez and Juan Escalante scored for Estancia (4-2-2 in league).

Saddleback 4, University 1--Jose Escudero scored two goals and Luis Guerrero and Hernan De Santos each scored one for Saddleback (12-4-2, 5-2-1) at University. Seth Redford scored in the second half for University (8-7-3, 2-4-2).

In the South Coast League:

Mission Viejo 2, El Toro 1--Doug Roberson and Rich Fiore scored for host Mission Viejo (12-6-5, 5-1-2), which moved into first place over El Toro (5-2-1).

Dana Hills 3, San Clemente 0--Knut Witthof, Brian Rogers and Rob Lindley scored for visiting Dana Hills.

In Freeway League girls’ soccer:

Troy 7, Buena Park 0--Jenny Scanlon scored four goals, Samantha Sangana, Layne Mosler and Kristan Foley had one each for host Tory (14-2-2, 6-1-1).

Sunny Hills 0, Fullerton 0--Shannan Brown had four saves for Sunny Hills (13-2-4, 5-1-2) and Heather Manzer had 24 for Fullerton (5-11-4, 2-4-2).
