COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Antelope Valley Women Gain First-Place Tie

Antelope Valley lost an eight-point lead in the final eight minutes of regulation play but came back to take a 66-60 overtime victory over Desert in a women’s Foothill Conference basketball game Saturday at Paraclete High.

Antelope Valley’s Denese Prince sank a free throw with 35 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime. Sophomore forward Molly Jonnum (20 points and 13 rebounds) scored six points in the overtime period.

With the win, Antelope Valley (13-10, 8-1 in conference play) improved its hopes for a conference title, pulling even with Desert (17-6, 8-1) for first place in the Foothill standings.

In other women’s games:

Cal State Northridge 69, CS Los Angeles 67--Dawn Broline hit a 16-foot jump shot with 15 seconds left to give Northridge a victory in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game at Los Angeles.

Cal State L. A. (7-14, 1-6) had three chances to tie the score but failed. Millie Junio missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity with 14 seconds left, Sabrina Yap missed a jump shot with two seconds remaining, and Kristen McDonald’s follow shot caromed off the rim at the buzzer.

Julie Arlotto scored a game-high 17 points for Northridge (9-13, 6-1) and moved to fourth on the Lady Matadors’ all-time career list with 932 points.

Canyons 87, Cuesta 65--Tressie Millender and Kim Posey each scored 17 points to lead host Canyons (19-5, 7-2) in a Western State Conference game. Michelle Cabaldon scored 13 points and Dawn Coleman and Dee Dee Hinson each added 10 for Canyons.

Point Loma Nazarene 82, Cal Lutheran 69--Brenda Lee scored 18 points and grabbed a game-high 19 rebounds in a losing effort in a National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics District 3 game at Cal Lutheran. Leslie Stevens scored 15 and Dani Elton added 11 for the Regals (13-7, 6-4 in District 3 play).

Moorpark 68, Pierce 66--Debbie Rabin scored 23 points and Cindy Wiley added 16 to pace the Raiders (16-8, 7-2) in a WSC game at Pierce.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Occidental 83, Claremont 75--Ethan Caldwell had 24 points and seven assists and Chris Anderson added 18 points and 12 rebounds for Occidental (8-13, 4-4). Everette Hill had 16 points and John Crawley added 12.

Cal Lutheran 85, Dominican College 82--Jeff deLaveaga scored a game-high 36 points and Mike Demeter hit the front end of a one-and-one with five seconds left to secure the NAIA District 3 win for host Cal Lutheran (5-16, 3-3).

BASEBALL

Mission 12, Pierce 2--The Free Spirit got nine hits, including home runs by Rudy Sanchez and Shawn Fontenot, to back the strong pitching of Nick Lymberopoulos in a game at Pierce.

Brad McGahan added two hits and three runs batted in for Mission (2-0).

The Master’s 7, Cal State L.A. 3--Mark MacArthur was three for four and Tony Jaime added two hits and two runs for The Master’s (1-1) in a nonleague game at Cal State L.A. (0-3). Craig Johnson was two for five with two RBIs for The Master’s.
