COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Antelope Valley Secures Title, 97-89

The Antelope Valley College men’s basketball team clinched the Foothill Conference title Friday night with a 97-89 victory at San Bernardino Valley.

San Bernardino (12-15, 4-8 in conference play) was whistled for four technicals with 14 seconds left and the game was suspended.

Tony Madison led Antelope Valley (25-6, 11-1) with 26 points and Dedan Thomas contributed 17 points and eight assists. The Marauders trailed by as many as 12 points early in the second half before taking a lead they would never relinquish with seven minutes remaining.

Antelope Valley, ranked seventh in the state, broke the school record for wins in a season. The Marauders have two conference games left.

In other men’s basketball games:

West L. A. 110, Canyons 108--Anthony Gates scored the last of his team-high 29 points on a 10-foot baseline jump shot with two seconds left to win a Western State Conference game.

Canyons center Aaron Clark scored 32 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal State Dominguez Hills 54, Cal State Northridge 44--Julie Arlotto scored a game-high 17 points for Northridge in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game at Toro Gymnasium, but the Lady Matadors’ offense sputtered after starting point guard Joan Weinerth was sidelined because of a sprained ankle in the first half.

Antelope Valley 75, San Bernardino Valley 63--Denise Prince scored 21 points and teammate Molly Jonnum added 20 for visiting Antelope Valley in a Foothill Conference game.

The Marauders ran their school-record winning streak to eight games.

Azusa Pacific 64, Cal Lutheran 60--Cal Lutheran’s Brenda Lee, named this week’s NAIA District 3 Player of the Week, continued her strong play with 20 points and 11 rebounds, but Azusa Pacific pulled away for a District 3 victory at home.

Cal State Sacramento 86, The Master’s 50--The Lady Mustangs trailed, 38-27, at the intermission, then were outscored, 48-23, in the second half in a nonconference game at The Master’s.

BASEBALL

Pierce 19, Mt. San Antonio 11--Mike Shwartzer had four hits, including a three-run home run in the first inning and a solo shot in the fourth, to lift the Brahmas (3-2) at Pierce.

Valley 6, San Bernardino Valley 3--Mitch Cizek, a freshman from Kennedy High, went the distance and limited San Bernardino to four hits in the second round of the Southwestern tournament at Sweetwater High in National City.

Cal Lutheran 23, Whittier 1--Cal Lutheran hit six homers and cracked 19 hits in its opener.
