SOUTHERN SECTION BOYS’ BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS : Killum’s 36 Help Lynwood Win, 104-73

Senior guard Earnest Killum scored 36 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead top-seeded Lynwood High over Arcadia, 104-73, in the first round of the Southern Section 5-AA boys’ basketball playoffs Tuesday night at Lynwood.

Lynwood (27-1), the San Gabriel Valley League champion, never trailed as the Knights moved into Friday’s second-round game against Alhambra, which defeated El Rancho in its opening-round game. Junior Mike Parisi led Arcadia (11-13) with 37 points.

In other 5-AA division action:

Leuzinger 65, St. Anthony 58--Frank Willis scored 19 points to help the Olympians hold off a late rally by the host Saints. Leuzinger (17-9) will play Lakewood on Friday.

St. Monica 66, Long Beach Jordan 46--Jahi Bacon scored 18 points and Cleveland Jackson grabbed 20 rebounds to lead the the fourth-seeded Mariners at Santa Monica. St. Monica (21-5), the Camino Real League champion, plays Hawthorne in the second round on Friday.

5-A DIVISION

Loyola 102, Thousand Oaks 73--Ryan Jamison scored 26 points to lead the second-seeded Cubs at Loyola. Loyola (20-3), the Del Rey League champion, outscored Thousand Oaks, 29-15, in the third quarter, with Jamison getting 11 points.

Pasadena 84, Buena 73--Don Mitchell scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Todd Lewis added 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs at Pasadena. Pasadena (21-5), the Pacific League champion, plays Los Alamitos on Friday.

4-AA DIVISION

Dominguez 66, St. John Bosco 46--The top-seeded Dons held the Braves to five points in the second quarter and had four players score in double figures to advance into Friday’s second round. Michael Whittiker scored 13 points to lead the Dons (20-5).

Beverly Hills 80, Claremont 52--Peter Micelli, a 6-foot-8 senior center, scored 24 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Normans at Beverly Hills. Beverly Hills (21-5), the Bay League champion, play Pasadena Muir in the second round on Friday.

California 72, Gahr 71--Derick Hoffert scored 26 points and Paul White added 20, including the winning jump shot with five seconds left at Whittier. The Condors (18-6) play second-seeded Compton on Friday.

4-A DIVISION

La Puente 75, Bosco Tech 73--The Warriors’ Anthony Calvillo scored 57 points including the winning three-point basket with two seconds remaining at La Puente.
