SOUTHERN SECTION BOYS’ BASKETBALL PLAYOFF ROUNDUP
In 3-A:
Pacifica 82, Monrovia 44--Forward Randy Schulze scored 21 points as host Pacifica won its first playoff game since the school opened in 1969 in the 3-A division.
St. Paul 85, Costa Mesa 79--Costa Mesa trailed, 43-39, at halftime, but could not sustain its momentum. Xavier Hanna scored 26 points and Jeff Pickens added 13 to lead the Mustangs (2-21) at St. Paul.
In 2-AA:
Santa Margarita 89, San Jacinto 62--Dan Bathey scored 22 points and Jeff Layne 18 to lead the Eagles (12-12) at Santa Margarita.
In 1-A:
Capistrano Valley Christian 59, Southern California Christian 54--Guard Chad Williams made eight free throws in the fourth quarter, including six in the final three minutes, to give Capistrano Valley Christian (9-15) the upset.
Center Shawn Wiltshire scored 30 points and had 20 rebounds for Southern California Christian (13-9).
In the Small Schools Division:
Newbridge 72, Cal Lutheran 65--Newbridge (15-8) rallied from a nine-point deficit and took the lead for good, 65-64, on a three-point shot with 44 seconds remaining. Brad Pluckhan scored 20 points for Cal Lutheran (11-8).
St. Margaret’s 79, Ambassador Baptist 61--Guard Dan Campaigne scored 37 points and had 11 assists as host St. Margaret’s (18-4) won its 15th consecutive game. Ryan Westendorf scored 22 points and grabbed a career-high 25 rebounds for St. Margaret’s.
