3-AA GIRLS : Frederick, Savanna Hold Off Newport Harbor Rally, 51-43

Carrie Frederick had 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Savanna girls’ basketball team to a 51-43 victory over Newport Harbor in the first round of the Southern Section 3-AA playoffs Wednesday night in Anaheim.

Frederick made six of seven free throws in the fourth quarter as the Rebels held off a Newport Harbor rally. The Rebels made 11 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Savanna trailed early but tied the score, 22-22, at halftime. The Rebels built a seven-point lead in the third quarter and maintained it with their free throw shooting.

Jackie Boxley had 13 points for Savanna (16-9), which plays John Glenn in the second round Saturday night.

Stacy Giem scored 25 points for Newport Harbor (6-16).

In other 3-AA games:

Compton Centennial 47, Los Amigos 36--Host Centennial led the entire game and two of its players--Crystal Fields (22 points) and Felicia Hogan (17 points)--scored all but eight of the team’s points.

“We never really got on track,” Los Amigos Coach Don Grabel said. Uyen Nguyen had 12 points and May Ly had 11 for Los Amigos (10-14). Centennial is 11-11.

Estancia 63, Troy 29--Melody Earle had 17 points, eight rebounds, nine assists and six steals and Monique Sweet had 15 points as Estancia (12-12) advanced to the second round. The Eagles took a 33-11 lead at the half. Dede Lagemann had 10 for Troy (5-13).
