SOUTHERN SECTION BOYS’ BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS : Sophomores Lead Faith Baptist

Led by sophomores Peter Rasmussen and Alex Estrada, Faith Baptist High rolled to a 74-64 win over second-seeded Montclair Prep in a Southern Section 1-A Division quarterfinal playoff game Tuesday night at Montclair Prep.

Estrada, a guard, finished with a game-high 28 points and 11 rebounds. Rasmussen, a forward, had 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Faith Baptist (17-10) played most of the game in a 2-3 zone defense, which Montclair Prep (19-5) failed to solve. The Mounties made just 25 of 79 (31.6%) field-goal attempts and five of 23 (21.7%) attempts from beyond the three-point arc.

Faith Baptist also killed Montclair Prep at the free-throw line, outscoring the Mounties, 29-8.

Notre Dame 76, Rancho Alamitos 71--Bobby DaCorsi scored 21 points to lead Notre Dame as the Knights upset host Rancho Alamitos in the quarterfinal round of the 3-A playoffs.

Notre Dame jumped to a 17-point lead in the first quarter, but Rancho Alamitos cut the deficit 11 by the end of the half.

Rancho Alamitos embarked on a 12-point run in the fourth quarter and cut the lead to four points, but the Knights capitalized on two free throws to seal the victory.

Pasadena 69, Canyon 65--Pasadena’s full-court press finally got the best of Canyon in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs scored a come-from-behind victory in a 5-A game at Saugus High.

Canyon led, 40-22, at halftime and, 54-45, after three quarters. But Pasadena ran off a 17-4 spurt to take a 62-57 lead with 3 minutes 24 seconds left.

Santa Clara 78, Chaminade 42--Shon Tarver scored a game-high 35 points to lead top-seeded Santa Clara (22-0) in a 2-AA game at Calabasas High.

Mark Mirkovich had 17 points and Mark Wiltshire had 10 for Chaminade (14-11), which had 10 rebounds in the game.

Bethel Christian 73, Highland Hall 71 (OT)--Leo Lett hit a 19-foot jump shot at the buzzer to upset the Small Schools’ No. 3 seeded team and break Highland Hall’s 19-game win streak in a game at Bethel Christian.

Highland Hall forced overtime when Craig Ernst scored two of his 21 points with four seconds remaining.
