HIGH SCHOOL BOYS’ BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS : RBV’s Parker Does Damage, Bonita Vista Falls

You could have fooled the Bonita Vista players, but Rancho Buena Vista actually did lose nine games this year.

Wednesday night, the Longhorns did not resemble a team that even lost two games. They shot, they rebounded and they ran a 15-8 Bonita Vista team out of the gym, 79-50, in the first round of the Division I section playoffs.

And it really wasn’t even that close.

After a close first quarter, which RBV led 22-15, the Longhorns erupted for nine consecutive points and never again trailed.

RBV’s Darryl Parker, son of former NBA player Sonny Parker, did most of the damage. After scoring just four points in the first quarter, Parker, a 6-foot-6 junior center, had 12 in the second quarter and 14 more in the third.

“As I started playing more, things opened up for me,” said Parker, who finished with 33 points (14 for 18 shooting) and 12 rebounds.

Most of Parker’s points came off of the RBV transition game. He had numerous tips and layups against the slower Bonita Vista big men.

“Parker makes everybody look slow,” O’Neill said.

“I just took what they gave me,” Parker said.

And that was quite a bit.

RBV guard Brad Grubaugh made things easier for Parker by opening things up from the outside, scoring most of his 21 points from the outside.

He had two three-pointers in his 19 points.

The Longhorns led 41-22 at half and 59-38 after three quarters.

The lead reached 78-43 before RBV Coach John O’Neil finally called off the dogs with 2:30 left.

But before the call was made, Grubaugh hit his head against the wall and suffered a cut below his eye.

“We had just talked about taking him out,” O’Neill said.

Mike Barnett led Bonita Vista with 14 points and Rope Perry added 13.

Marcus Rankin added 16 points for RBV.

RBV (15-9), which lost four games and finished third in the Palomar League, will travel to third-seeded Patrick Henry Friday in a quarterfinal game.

“We’re playing with a lot of confidence right now,” Parker said. “We’re playing as well as we have all season.”

“Ever since the last Poway game, we’ve played great basketball,” O’Neill said.
