Share

The Stanford men’s swimming team won only one event, but it used depth to lead the Pacific 10 championships Monday night at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach with 254 points. USC is second with 202 points and UCLA is third at 183.

After Stanford won the 200-yard medley relay, USC senior Dan Jorgensen won the 500-yard freestyle with an NCAA qualifying time of 4:19.46. Jorgensen, who was NCAA champion in the event as a freshman, took the lead after 150 yards and steadily increased it. Lunn Lestina and John Witchel, both of Stanford, were second and third, respectively.

The Trojans claimed another championship in the 200-yard individual medley when sophomore Gary Anderson pulled away from the field in the last 50 yards to finish at 1:47.95. Matt Rodgers of Stanford was second.

UCLA sophomores Brian Kurza and Byron Davis finished one-two in the 50-yard freestyle. Kurza’s time of 19.81 seconds tied the conference record set by Robin Leamy, also of UCLA, in 1982. The Bruins concluded the evening by winning the 400-yard medley relay.

The meet runs through Wednesday, with preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
