DIGEST : Valley’s Rocher, Canyons’ Millender Named to All-State Team

Sandrine Rocher of state semifinalist Valley College and Canyons’ Tressie Millender were named to the 12-woman all-state junior college basketball team in a vote by coaches.

Moorpark’s Debra Rabin joined Rocher and Millender on the 12-woman All-Southern California team.

Rocher, a 5-foot-10 sophomore forward, averaged 15.5 points and 7.9 rebounds a game for Valley (30-6).

Millender, also a 5-10 sophomore forward, earlier was named Western State Conference Player of the Year. She averaged 18.7 points and 8.7 rebounds and led Canyons (26-8) to the state final eight.

Rabin, a 5-9 point guard, averaged 17.1 points and 4.1 assists.

Jim Stephens of Valley College was named WSC coach of the year and Monarch guard Andre Harrell was selected conference player of the year in a vote by coaches.

Harrell, a 6-1 sophomore guard, was joined on the 10-man WSC Southern Division first team by 6-5 Valley sophomore forward Shawn DeLaittre.

Moorpark and Glendale each had three first-team selections. Glendale’s Gary Fowler, a 6-5 sophomore center; Bruce Heicke, a 6-2 sophomore guard; and David Swanson, a 6-5 sophomore forward were All-Southern Division. Roger Thomas, a 6-1 sophomore guard; Sam Crawford, a 5-8 freshman guard; and Greg Taylor, a 6-6 sophomore center represented Moorpark on the All-Northern Division squad.

Aaron Clark, Canyons’ 6-3 sophomore center, made the Southern Division team. Crawford and Harrell are also among four WSC players nominated for the all-state team, which will be announced today.

Two more Occidental College athletes have qualified for the NCAA Division III track and field championships.

Pam Childs qualified in the long jump with an 18-foot, 2-inch jump last weekend at Claremont in an SCIAC dual meet won by Occidental. The meet included Claremont, Caltech and Pomona-Pitzer.

Heather Beach qualified in the triple jump with a mark of 37-2.

Jenny Lawrence won three events: the 100 hurdles (16.10 seconds), the high jump (5-2), and the javelin (117-4).

Brady Dargan won three men’s events: the shot put (44-6), discus (140-6) and hammer throw (163-6).

Ethan Caldwell, a senior point guard who averaged 12.4 points for the Occidental basketball team this season, has been selected to the GTE Academic All-American Team for Division 8, which includes West Coast schools. A grade-point average of 3.2 or higher was required.
