PREP SOFTBALL ROUNDUP : Mission Viejo’s Dull Gets No-Hitter

Kerin Dull of Mission Viejo pitched a no-hitter to lead Mission Viejo High School to a 1-0 victory over Trabuco Hills in a first-round game of the Laguna Hills softball tournament Tuesday at Alicia Park.

Dull struck out eight and did not walk a batter. But Mission Viejo made three errors to spoil Dull’s bid for a perfect game.

In other Laguna Hills tournament games:

Santa Ana 13, Laguna Hills 10--Santa Ana (3-2) scored six runs and had 12 hits. Laguna Hills (1-3) scored seven runs in the fifth to take a 9-6 lead.

Marina 8, Los Amigos 0--Janet Miyahara pitched a one-hitter and doubled and had three RBIs to lead Marina. Tricia Cole homered in the second inning.

Irvine 23, Costa Mesa 1--Cheryl Dunmeyer hit a grand slam in the fourth inning. The game was stopped after five innings because of the mercy rule.

Tustin 2, Capistrano Valley 1--Shannon Ellis had three hits and two RBIs to lead Tustin.

Foothill 9, Dana Hills 6--Kathy Shortall had triples and Kelley Green had two hits and scored twice to lead Foothill.

In nonleague:

University 1-1, San Clemente 2-0--Shareen Patton of University pitched a no-hitter in a game stopped after five innings because of darkness. University won, 1-0, to earn a split of a doubleheader. San Clemente won the first game, 2-1. Patton struck out four and walked two.

In the first game, Tara Roush pitched a one-hitter for San Clemente.

El Toro 1-6, Woodbridge 0-0--Paige Lauby (3-0) pitched a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts and Jennifer Jourden (3-0) pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts as visiting El Toro swept a doubleheader. In the first game Maegan Juggert tripled in the games’ only run in the fifth inning. In the second game, Jaime Smith went three for four with a home run and three runs batted in for the Chargers (7-1).

Brea-Olinda 6-0, Rosary 1-0--Kim Deck hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning and had five RBIs to lead Brea-Olinda in the first game. Deck and Natalie Stevens had back-to-back home runs in the third inning for Brea-Olinda (4-3).

Liberty Christian 19, Coast Christian 2--Jen Caruso had two hits and scored three times. Jenny Engstrom pitched a no-hitter and struck out 11 in five innings to lead Liberty Christian (1-2). The game was stopped because of the mercy rule.

Valencia 4, El Dorado 2--Valencia scored three runs in the seventh inning at El Dorado.

Whittier Christian 4, St. Paul 2--Summer Silva drove in two runs with a single in the fourth inning to give the Heralds a 4-2 lead at home. Veronica Martinez (3-1) earned the victory for Whittier Christian (4-2).

Connelly 17, Garden Grove Claremont 5--Host Connelly scored seven runs in the second inning and Stacy Aleantor struck out eight and allowed two hits. Claremont (2-3) committed 13 errors. Connelly is 1-1.

Kennedy 1, Ocean View 0--Freshman Nicole Paloney, pitching in her first high school game, allowed five hits and no walks in her shutout at Kennedy. Jackie Duncan scored on an error in the sixth inning for Kennedy (2-1).

Garden Grove 1, Huntington Beach 0--Stephanie Smith pitched two-hitter, striking out 10, for Garden Grove (3-1) at home. Cari White scored on an error in the third inning.

Orange Lutheran 30, Cal Lutheran 5--Stacie Charlton had two triples and five RBIs in a 23-run second inning for Orange Lutheran (3-1). Charlton went three for four with nine RBIs.

Santa Margarita 2, Capistrano Valley Christian 1--Trailing, 1-0, in the bottom of the seventh inning, Santa Margarita (3-0) scored two runs to win.

El Modena 15, Orange 0--Freshman Alexis Beckman pitched a two-hitter, walked two and struck out six. She also went five for six, doubled, tripled and had three RBIs to lead El Modena (2-2). Sophomore Stephanie Guyon had three hits and two RBIs for El Modena.

Canyon 2, Esperanza 1--Host Esperanza (3-4) had runners on second and third with no outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Sara Roberts stuck out two and got a pop up to end the threat. Canyon is 6-1.

Los Alamitos 5, Bolsa Grande 0--Dana Doyle singled and had an RBI and Shannon Skoglund (3-0) struck out four, allowed four hits and walked none to lead Los Alamitos (4-1).
