Vidrios’ No-Hitter Gives Host Crawford Title

If Crawford High pitcher Sal Vidrios hadn’t given up seven runs in fewer than two innings in his previous start, he wouldn’t have pitched in Saturday’s championship game of the eighth annual Crawford Tournament.

Vidrios was well-rested after his early departure from a 16-1 loss to Clairemont Wednesday, and it showed. He threw a no-hitter against Morse to lead the Colts (5-1) to a 15-0 victory over the Tigers (4-2) in the final.

Vidrios, who was 3-0 last year as a junior, improved to 2-1. He faced only 22 batters--one over the minimum--as he struck out five and walked only two, both to lead off an inning. One was erased on a second-inning double play.

“It’s kind of ironic,” Crawford Coach Roger Engle said. “The only reason Sal was pitching is because he got shellacked by Clairemont. He certainly rebounded today.”

Vidrios’ no-hit bid was saved in the sixth when Anthony Sorrell ended the inning with a diving catch. It also saved the shutout, Engle said; Vidrios had walked the leadoff batter.

Senior first baseman Joe McWilliams hit two three-run homers and finished with six RBIs. Leadoff batter Marcus Thompson went one for two, scored three runs and hit a two-run homer. Keith Klayman went two for two with an RBI double.

“I don’t remember in my 10 years here anyone having two three-run homers in one game,” said Engle.

The homers were the first of the season for both McWilliams and Thompson.

Helix 6, Escondido 5--In the bottom of the sixth, Escondido trailed, 6-5, and had runners on first and third with two outs. Helix reliever Rob Ippolito came in, batted down what would have been Escondido’s game-winning hit and threw to first for the final out. Helix is 3-2-1, Escondido 1-5.

St. Augustine 11, Mission Bay 4--Jason Alcoser hit a grand slam to put the finishing touches on a week in which he was eight for 11 with a home run, four doubles and 10 RBIs in three games. Teammate Roger Alvarez was two for four with two RBIs. St. Augustine and Mission Bay are both 1-5.

GMC Tournament

Santana 12, Montgomery 10--In the championship game, Santana’s four-run inning at the top of the eighth gave the Sultans a 12-8 cushion. Montgomery scored two unearned runs in its half of the extra inning. Gabe Hernandez was four for five and teammate Mike Romo had three RBIs in the eighth for Santana (6-0).

San Diego 13, Lincoln 11--Center Claudio Moreno went three for five with four RBIs to lead San Diego (4-2) in a third-place game at San Diego. Terry Martin and Corey Lewis were both three for five for Lincoln (3-3).

Reyman-Pirate Tournament

Rancho Buena Vista 16, San Pasqual 5--Led by the hitting of Dave Roberts, Steve Valencia, James Gore and Chris Gorr, RBV scored its runs on 13 hits.
