No-hitter Highlights USIU Softball Sweep

Cindy Oliver pitched a no-hitter in U.S. International’s 4-0 second game victory to sweep a softball double header from Oregon State Saturday at USIU. In the first game, USIU’s Nora Flores allowed just one hit helping the Gulls win, 5-1. USIU’s pitching staff has allowed just three hits in its last three games.

In the first game, freshman catcher Barbara Dotson hit a two-run homer giving USIU a 3-1 first-inning lead. For the day, Staci Mosher went four for five for USIU (9-14).

BASEBALL

Devin Bundy and Jim Alexander each hit a home-run in the University of San Diego’s 7-3 victory over host Santa Clara (8-6-1, 13-13-2) in a West Coast Conference game. Bundy and Dave Pingree each went two for five with two RBIs for USD (8-7, 12-14).

Ryan Kato hit the game-winning RBI in Sacramento State’s 4-3 victory over host San Diego State (16-9). Derek Vinyard went two for four with a double and an RBI for SDSU (16-9).

USIU lost a double header to host UC Santa Barbara. In the first game UCSB defeated USIU, 6-3 and in the second game UCSB won, 10-2. For the day, Geoff Martinez went three for seven with two doubles and two RBIs for USIU (8-19-1). UCSB improved to 18-8.

MEN’S TENNIS

The University of San Diego (14-2), which has won the championship match every year since the inaugural USD Team Invitational four years ago, defeated Yale, 6-0 for first place. Jose Luis Noriega defeated Craig Kennedy, 6-4, 6-0, for USD, ranked 25th nationally.

BODY SURFING

Mike Cunningham, a five-time world champion, won the championship heat of the third annual Pacific Beach Pro-Am. Cunningham, the defending champion from Gardena, took the $400 first-place prize with a score of 135.

La Costa’s Jeff Davies (124), San Diego’s Alan Fogel (122) and Encinitas’ Keith Kulberg (121) rounded out the top four in the professional division.
